Hon. Seidu Rashid has won the 2023/ 2024 University of Ghana Parliament House (UGPH) elections for the 19th parliament.
The elections which was held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, saw Hon. Seidu Rashid emerge victorious with 78 votes against his opponent Hon. Comfort Naana Adwoa Okyere, who garnered 51 votes.
Speaking to Univers News, Hon. Seidu Rashid expressed his profound gratitude to the members of the house for their confidence in him and vowed to work diligently to enhance the performance of the university of Ghana parliament house.
“The election went as expected and I was expecting the descending members of the house to repose confidence in me to serve their interests of which the honorable members of the House have done that judiciary. This confidence of which they have impose in me is not going to be left down. We are going to work tirelessly to ensure that [there is going] to be a facelift of the University of Ghana Parliament House.”
On the election procedures, the clerk of the 18th Parliament house, Hon. Emmanuel Tawiah indicated that proper measures such as verifying members before balloting led to a free and fair election without challenges.
“I, the chief clerk and my deputy clerk make sure everything was actually in order and make sure every member was verified before you even go to the ballot box to actually vote. It was a free and fair elections.”
Hon. Tawiah further revealed that the elections were peaceful with little challenges due to information on the election procedures given to every individual involved in the elections.
“And after the election everybody was ok and fine with the results that came out and we didn’t encounter any challenge and nothing was a challenge for us because we knew what we were doing so we actually make sure everything was in order. Prior to the elections we have outlined the processes and we have made things available, information available to members of parliament so they knew what was actually going to happen.”
The University of Ghana Parliament House was established 19 years ago and is currently Ghana’s oldest student parliament. It is a replica of the national legislature where aspiring students are educated and developed to speak in public and work as politicians in the future.
On March 4, 2023, the University of Ghana Parliament House had its final sitting of the second session of the 18th parliament, during which new leaders were chosen to lead the 19th Parliament of UGPH. Both Hon. Comfort Naana Adwoa Okyere and Hon. Seidu Rashid, members of the majority and minority caucus respectively ran for the office of the speakership this year.
The mode for this election was strictly face to face which was conducted by the Clerk and his deputies.
The sitting began at exactly 8:30 pm and ended at 12:30am.
At the end of the election, there were 131 votes cast out of the 374 eligible voters, with 2 votes being rejected.
Also, each caucus had a leadership election to choose its leaders, deputy leaders, and whips.
