Ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, several top clubs are turning to foreign head coaches to steer their campaigns.
Major teams, including Accra Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Bibiani GoldStars, Heart of Lions, and Vision FC, have all appointed foreign tacticians.
This growing trend reflects a widespread effort among clubs to elevate their performance while simultaneously sparking fresh debates regarding the reliance on and development of local Ghanaian coaching talent.
At Hearts of Oak, Serbian manager Nebojsa Kapor has signed a two-year deal to replace Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, who was let go despite securing a third-place finish and a strong defensive record under a transfer ban.
Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko hired South African coach Eric Tinkler in July to take over after Karim Zito’s departure earlier in the year. Although Zito guided the Porcupine Warriors to MTN FA Cup and President’s Cup glory, inconsistent league results led the club to seek a new direction with Tinkler.
Bibiani GoldStars, the 2024/25 champions, have appointed Greek manager Petros Koukouras to bring stability after a tumultuous 2025/26 season where they finished second despite cycling through four different head coaches.
Elsewhere, Heart of Lions brought in Turkish manager Kasım Gökyıldız following the expiration of Bashir Hayford’s contract, and Vision FC appointed Serbian coach Predrag Jaredić after parting ways with Nana Kweku Agyemang, who had led them through their inaugural top-flight campaign.
While these foreign coaches bring new tactical ideas, methodologies, and experience, their presence highlights the fading confidence placed in local managers.
As the 2026/27 season approaches, all eyes will be on these foreign tacticians, who face high expectations to deliver quick results and validate their clubs’ decisions to look beyond Ghana’s local coaching pool.
