Former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey has chided Ghanaian boxer Isaac Dogbe’s approach in his world title Bout with Cuban Robeisi Ramirez.
Dogbe lost by a unanimous decision a result the former WBO junior feather weight champion challenged his compatriot’s tactics that he deployed in the bout.
Joshua went hard on the former world champion for giving too much space to his opponent who capitalized on it to conquer him in what was an enthralling bout in Tulsa, United States of America.
He centered his criticisms on how Dogbe was not smart enough to defend himself when necessary and gave his opponent enough space to do what he wants.
“He had to stay on the guy you don’t even have to let him breath nor stand. He made it look like when you stand you want the guy to take his time. Dogbe allowed the guy to take his time. Sometimes he stand like he is trying to see what Dogbe is doing then if Dogbe throw his punches he is always counter punching. Dogbe allowed the guy to be free. He allowed him to be free too much, he was supposed to be on him,” Clottey lamented.
Meanwhile, Communications director of Ghana Boxing authority Mohammed Ali Lamptey believes Isaac Dogbe will correct his mistakes and bounce back stronger going forward. He noted the Ghanaian boxer should have prepared for his opponent adequately considering his pedigree in the profession.
The GBA spokesperson also revealed that the Federation’s good plans it has put in place for boxers in Ghana has helped churn out ten world champions and highlighted that the former world champion lost the bout ‘tactically’.
“It can never be unfortunate is a process. It was through the process that we were able to produce ten world champions including Joshua Clottey and all the ten boxers are born in this country and gone through the process. Isaac Dogbe was a former world champion, he has moved weight from Super Bantam weight to Feather weight. In this division before this fight, he fought five times and won all the fights. So this particular fight Dogbe lost the fight tactically not technically. Tactically in the sense that you are fighting against a boxer who is an amateur, he has won two gold at the amateur level when he became professional boxer” he said
He also disclosed that Ramirez’s hunger for success played pivotal role in the bout as the Cuban boxer was eager to win his maiden world title in the division.
“He fought just over twelve fights lost only one with seven wins. This is a credible opponent hungry for success, for the first time he wants to win a world title. If you watch his fight the guy is technically gifted and tactically gifted” he added.
Univers Sports understands Dogbe could be back in action late this year but the defeat to Ramirez has left many Ghanaians disappointed as the 28-year old missed out on a chance to become a two weight division world champion.
