MIASA holds 5 day writing workshop for early career African academics

The Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa(MIASA) at the University of Ghana is holding a 5 day writing workshop to train early career African academics on how to undertake scholarly publications to push their careers in the various fields of expertise.

The Writing workshop is being held from the 25th of April,2023 to the 29th of April,2023  on the campus of the University of Ghana.

Speaking at the event, the German Co-Director of  MIASA , Dr Susan Baller intimated that one of the key goals of the Institute is to provide senior level academics across various disciplines in Humanities across Africa as mentors to selected early grade African academics to coach them on scholarly writings and how to get reputable academic journals globally to publish their research findings to ensure continued progress in their budding careers in institutions of higher learning in Africa.

” One of the key guiding principles for us at MIASA is to connect senior level African academics to their junior colleagues selected from across Africa to guide them on how to undertake research and author high quality academic papers to propel their careers to the next level and contribute significantly to knowledge dissemination on the continent and beyond”.

Also, the Convener of the 2023 MIASA Writing workshop and Head of Sociology Department at the University of Ghana, Professor Akosua Darkwah added that together with five other colleagues drawn from various universities put energies and experiences together to hold intensive training to the selected young academics in the process of research purpose, to writing of abstract which results in the final output of high quality research works that will propel Africa’s voice and representation in globally acclaimed journals to shape the changing dynamics of higher learning in their local universities as well as put themselves in competition from scholars across the world .

” I am the Project Lead together with 5 other colleagues commissioned and drawn from top rated universities in Africa mandated to work intensively with the selected young academics from African universities on how to identify a research topic, to putting together literature on the findings and merging all the rigorous processes to produce a fine  body of work which can rival other academic papers across the globe for publication into highly reputable journals which promote knowledge dissemination and discourse in an ultra competitive world and create a formidable network of young African scholars for the future of higher learning on the continent in general”.

The highly reputed and senior academic mentors for the Workshop are as follows;

  • Professor Akosua Darkwah ( Associate Professor of Sociology and Head of Department)
  • Professor Abdul Gafaru Abdulai ( Associate Professor , University of Ghana Business School)
  • Professor Seidu M.Alidu (Associate Professor of Political Science , University of Ghana)
  • Dr .George M Bob-Miliar ( Director , Centre for Cultural and African Studies ,KNUST)
  • Dr. Simon Bawakyillenuo ( Senior Research Fellow , Institute of Statistical ,Social and Economic Research ,UG).
  • Professor Akosua Anyidoho (Director of Centre for Social Policy Studies ,UG)

The selected (18) young academics were drawn from various partner universities of MIASA in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan ,Ghana,Uganda, Ethiopia and Cameroon.
