President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has nudged the media to uphold and maintain impeccable ethical standards as the country gears up for the upcoming December general elections.

According to him, the period preceding elections is always of great significance in information circulation, and any misunderstandings can have a profound impact on the electoral outcomes.

Addressing attendees at Radio Univers’ 30th-anniversary celebration launch on April 26, 2024, Mr. Dwumfour cautioned the media to desist from any conduct that would tamper with the peace and tranquility of the nation.

“All of us need to recognize and appreciate that the freedom of the press that we so cherish gives journalists, publishers and other media the ability to uncover the truth, hold the power accountable and share information that educates the public.”

“As the December 7 elections approaches, I know many politicians will try and leverage their relationship with some radio stations to make divisive and dangerous comments and try and recognize the media against its opponents. I urge all the media to alert and insist on only decent messages on their platforms. It is said that elections often challenge democratic institutions like ours, but resilient democratic institutions will rise to the challenge. I hope that the media will rise above the challenges that characterize elections.”

Mr. Dwumfour further explained that elections play a pivotal role in the longevity of democracies and therefore, the media must ensure that they rise above any challenges posing a threat to this role.

As Ghana prepares for a climactic electoral process, Dwumfour’s impassioned plea serves as a timely reminder of the media’s vital role in safeguarding the democratic process and promoting a peaceful and transparent election environment.
