‎As the University of Ghana’s Student Financial Aid Office marks its 20th anniversary, its head, Selina Torrison Saaka, is urging greater public and institutional support to help students from needy backgrounds access higher education.

‎In an interview on Campus Exclusive, Ms Saaka emphasised the need for stronger backing from the public, organisations, and industry players, highlighting the transformative impact of financial aid on students’ lives.

‎”What’s more is that we want to spotlight financial aid—not just because we want to be heard, but because we believe financial aid is a powerful channel for transforming the lives of people from very disadvantaged backgrounds,” she said.

‎”We want to tell these stories so that industries are inspired to give more. The conference is about highlighting how impactful financial aid can be, and why people should support it,” she added.

‎As part of the anniversary celebrations, the office is organizing a two-day conference themed “Promoting Equity, Expanding Access, and Enhancing Aid Administration in Tertiary Education.” The event is scheduled for July 8 and 9, 2025, at the ISSER Conference Centre, University of Ghana.

‎”Twenty years is a very significant milestone,” Madam Saaka noted. “We asked ourselves, ‘What better way to mark it?’ and thought it would be great to bring people together in one space to share best practices, learn from what is happening in other places, and also allow others to learn from us.”
