Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has reiterated her commitment to transforming the University into a research- intensive institution. This initiative is in line with the University’s internationalization drive in promoting academic excellence in Ghana and Africa.
She was speaking at the climax of the Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa, celebrated annually on June 30, in remembrance of the continent’s great contribution to the rise and development of modern science and technology.
The day’s celebration climaxed a series of the month-long events and schorlarly exhibitions, under the theme “Nurturing Resilience, Adopting Technology, Embracing Humanism.
The University of Ghana, as part of our internationalization drive, our steadfast commitment to the vision to become a research-intensive university and a key player in the realization of the science and technology goals of Ghana and Africa is proud to champion this celebration. She said.
Prof. Amfo also emphasized the need to celebrate the continent’s invaluable contributions to modern science and technology, which often go unnoticed, but has nurtured numerous globally recognized intellectual giants.
She further commended the scope and diversity of exhibitions and events organized by various schools, departments, and colleges of the university, as well as their active participation annually.
Touching on the positive impact of these scholarly scientific activities on the University, she indicated that these endeavors had greatly contributed to the school’s rankings and, in the long run, will contribute to the changing narrative of Africa, recognizing the continent’s limitless potential for innovation and development.
The achievements of researchers at the University of Ghana have significantly impacted the institution’s global rankings. The recent Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) ranked the university as the leading institution in the country, the second best in West Africa, and among some of the best universities worldwide. The University of Ghana continues to be recognized as one of Africa’s top institutions of higher learning and research, as featured by Times Higher Education (THE), QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), USA News’ Global Ranking of the World’s Best Universities, and Webometrics ranking.
The University’s three-part climax event featured an exhibition, a high-level panel discussion, and the launch of seven electronic textbooks authored by faculty and funded by Building Stronger Universities in Developing Countries (BSU 3).
The Vice Chancellor expressed deep appreciation to the funders, industry partners, and the Government of Ghana for their invaluable support. She also expressed her hope that the platform would generate valuable ideas to further increase the university’s impact on knowledge generation, dissemination, and utilization worldwide.
