UG SPMS holds dinner and awards ceremony

The University of Ghana School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (UGSPMS) has commemorated its annual Awards and Dinner Ceremony, which was intended to honor Students, Staff, and Faculty of various departments within the school.

The ceremony which was hosted at the forecourt of the Daniel Adzei Bekoe Building Biochemistry Department on December 15, 2023 witnessed the gathering of esteemed individuals to acknowledge outstanding achievements and contributions within the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

Speaking at the ceremony, the University of Ghana Pro Vice-Chancellor of Academic and Students Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare expressed the acknowledgment of the University’s management to the faculty for optimizing the compact academic year.

“This has been a very difficult year, we’ve had about 3 semesters in one year and I know that it takes a toll on everybody, faculty, staff, and even students. So as management, we want to congratulate you for surviving such a tough year.“

Further in his speech, he mentioned some initiatives the university’s management has put in place to enhance teaching and learning as well as promote staff welfare, as part of the university’s effort to curb challenges within the departments.

“As Management, we are conscious of all the sacrifices the faculty and staff make to maintain the standards of this University.”

“We have several initiatives to try to make the teaching experience better and to improve the staff welfare, initiatives to make sure that our promotions are faster. We have championed the metrics method of assessment, which in particular will benefit the sciences……”

“In addition, we worked systematically over the last 2 years to try to release as many resources to the colleges as possible and that will trickle down to the departments so that there’s a little more resource to varied agents and to take care of the expenses at the department level…we are making progress. Last year and this year the colleges have received unprecedented levels of funding and we hope that there will be an impact on the department.”

In an interview with Univers News, some awardees at the dinner shared the significance of the awards and offered insights into their accomplishment.

“I was acknowledged for my work in this University over the years, over 33 years. The University has gone a long way, it’s celebrating its 75th anniversary and some of us have done almost 1/3 of the work. I think that [the acknowledgment] sets the tone for us to up the mantle for the younger ones to support and mentor them to progress and work so that come the next 75 years, this university will continue to excel and at the same time optimize its research capacity and capabilities for the benefit of this country….”

The ceremony did not honor faculty, staff, and students alone, however, climaxed with activities that included dinner, the Red Carpet, and exhilarating musicals.
