The Coordinator for Special Programmes at the University of Ghana Basic School, Mrs. Millicent Asare, has urged parents to actively monitor and guide their children’s use of electronic devices.

Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers on Thursday, March 20, 2025, she stressed the importance of parental involvement in shaping responsible digital habits among children.

Mrs. Asare raised concerns about the increasing screen time among children, highlighting its adverse effects on their eyesight and the risks of exposure to inappropriate online content.

She noted that prolonged use of electronic gadgets has contributed to a rise in eye-related issues such as digital eye strain and blurred vision, a situation she has personally observed in her own home.

“Healthwise, children are gradually losing their sight. Prolonged screen exposure is affecting them, and many now require spectacles to aid their vision. I have two in my home.”

Beyond physical health concerns, she also underscored the moral and social risks associated with unregulated internet use. She warned that children’s natural curiosity could lead them to explore inappropriate content online, which could undermine the values instilled in them.

Mrs. Asare, therefore, called on parents to implement measures that ensure their children’s digital activities are safe, balanced, and age-appropriate.
