The General Secretary of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council, Emmanuella Boakye Yiadom has called on the Director of the University of Ghana Hospital to make the student clinic operate for 24-hours a day to help solve the health challenges that some members of the university community may face at night.
The General Secretary in a letter on January 22, 2023 indicated that “the attention of the leadership of the Students’ Representative Council has been drawn to the fact that students who fall sick at night, and who need medical attention at night are unable to access the university’s hospital within the safest time in the evening as a result of proximity to the hospital and the level of insecurity on campus at night. Additionally, accessibility to cars to help convey students to the hospital is rarely possible and this is detrimental to the ill-health conditions of all victims given the circumstances.”
She then called on the Director of the UG Hospital and other stakeholders to make the student clinic operational for 24 hours every day to enhance its accessibility at all times.
“We therefore plead with your office and all relevant stakeholders to come to our aid by providing for us a 24-hour operation of the student clinic to curb and solve the aforementioned challenges given that the sought for intervention would enhance accessibility at the right time and at all times. We believe this intervention would go a long way to save the precious lives of our dear students, she added.
This move reflects one of the health policies that the General Secretary promised to implement when elected.
