The Director of Academic Affairs at the University of Ghana, Lydia Nyarko-Danquah, has confirmed the removal of degree classifications from the University’s graduation portal to protect students’ privacy.
The decision follows advocacy by Radio Univers and complaints from some graduating students, who appealed to the University’s academic management over concerns about the public visibility of their degree classifications.
Speaking to Univers News, the Director explained that degree classifications will no longer be displayed publicly on the graduation portal. Instead, they will only be accessible to graduands through their individual student portals during the registration process.
According to her, the University identified the public display of degree classifications as a privacy concern and took steps to address it.
“Students’ classes were exposed on the graduation portal, and we realised that this was a privacy issue. We decided to take off the classes, and this will be the practice going forward. Students will be able to view their classifications only when they log into the system to register. The classes will not be publicly displayed for anyone to check,” she stated.
She added that the decision was informed by feedback received through Radio Univers and forms part of efforts to enhance the privacy of graduating students.
