Quality Assurance Officer of Peki College of Education and Science tutor, Mr. Dah Eric Manfred has expressed concern and worry over the poor remuneration and working conditions of teachers as a main factor hindering quality education in the country.

Mr. Dah Eric Manfred was speaking in an interview on Campus Exclusive earlier this morning.

According to him, the poor motivation for teachers has led to the increasing number of teachers leaving Ghana to abroad. He emphasized that the issue of poor output from teachers stems from the government’s failure to prioritize teachers.

“There is a need for the teacher to be well motivated in terms of salaries and intrinsically so that [they] feel better to perform in the classroom and these are lacking… therefore affecting the output of the teachers in the classroom. These days most teachers are leaving because they have heard that in the developed world the salaries, the recommendations, the conditions under which teachers work are better than done so most of them are actually leaving the country.”

“I think the leaders are not actually prioritizing teachers enough as the implementers of the curriculum. They have a very crucial rule to [ensure] teaching and learning should be better in our schools…there is a need for the leaders to take their welfare into consideration.”

Mr. Dah Eric Manfred continued to advocate for fair compensation for teachers and presented a series of recommendations to the government aimed at enhancing education in Ghana.

“Some of the recommendations are to suggest proper regeneration for teachers, provision of teaching and learning resources by the government to the schools, especially the base schools. Then provision of infrastructure, reduction in class to promote effective teacher and people interaction in the classroom.”
