The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has urged the Student Loan Trust Fund and the Government to disburse funds to students who have applied for students loan.

A number of students across the country have complained of the non-payment of student loans.

In a statement released on Sunday, February 26, 2022,  the National Union of Ghana students ( NUGS) said arrears from last semester have not been catered for, preventing students to complete their academic registration.

“It is unfortunate to also note that last semester’s arrears have also not been paid, this is a huge problem in the face of the current situation in the country with students facing the inability to register and continue their academic activity. At the moment about 70,000 students have applied”.

The union expressed worry over notices issued from some institutions cautioning students of the closure of the academic registration deadline and the risk of students forfeiting their exams as a result of non-payment of fees from student loans.

“It’s even more worrying to note that some institutions have issued notices, warning students of the closing registration deadline, an example is the University of Business and Integrated Development (UBIDS-WA) amongst others. KNUST is set to write mid-semester exams from the 27th of February, 2023, it’s unfortunate that several of our students risk not being able to write the exams due to inability to pay their fees as a result of non-payment of student loans”.

The Union entreated students to remain calm and contact NUGS local secretariats on campuses for unusual and dire circumstances.

“The union entreats students to calm down and call on our various local secretariats on campuses with special and urgent situations to reach out to the National Secretariats for immediate assistance.”
