Educationist, Nii Armah Addy says Ghana’s education is on the wrong path as initiatives taken by the government is gradually preventing the educational system to meet global standards.
Speaking at the back of the International day of education celebrated annually on January 24, Nii Armah Addy says Ghana’s education needs a complete overhaul in order to compete with schools outside Ghana.
I have to be honest and forth right, I can’t see what we are doing, to the extent that we seem to be dissociating ourselves from the world’s standards, it’s as if we can do things on our own. There is a lot we need to do right now.
Nii Armah Addy also called for a parallel run of the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination together with SAT, ACT, and other International examinations to make it easier for students to apply for schools outside of Ghana. with their results.
Most of the things the ministry of education is proposing are going to be inward looking because the examinations we are going to write now are not going to be international examinations, we do the WASSCE if you like, what we are proposing now that , you write the WASSCE but let say add SAT or other international examinations, what we are doing now, we are writing entrance exams, it means that the certifications that we will get are going to be internal because you are running your own curriculum and countries that do that are countries that are advanced enough to engage their own people in places of work and they have the capacity to contain their people, but here in Ghana, we want to travel out to work but with which results?
In 2018, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as the “International Day of Education”. This year’s theme is “to invest in people, prioritize education.”
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), education must be prioritized to accelerate progress towards all the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a global recession, growing inequalities, and the climate crisis.
UNESCO dedicated this year’s International Day to girls and women in Afghanistan who have been deprived of their right to education. It is calling for the immediate lifting of the ban restricting their access to education.
