President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh has announced the union’s plans to deploy about two hundred volunteer teachers to areas affected by the Akosombo – Kpong Dam spillage.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive this morning, he conveyed the union’s concern about the education of the affected students with the provision of trained teachers to engage the students.
Daniel also revealed that prior to the relief measure, the union had called for some volunteers to join hands with them to tutor students in the affected areas.
“Teachers who are trained to handle these students have unfortunately been affected by the floods. One of the pivotal things we are going to do is to rule out voluntary teaching mechanisms. It’s the first of its kind.”
“Hopefully, tomorrow we will be sending about two hundred teachers to areas in the Volta Region. For the past three days, we’ve been training the volunteers to ensure that they stick to the new curriculum.”
On the subject of unpaid allowances of nursing trainees, Daniel mentioned that the union is engaging major stakeholders to ensure that the arrears which are long overdue are paid.
“In the coming days, one of the things we will be doing is working on the nursing trainees’ allowances. It’s been eighteen months.”
“We have started engagements with the Minister of Health to find a proper structure in place to help facilitate the payment of allowances. Hopefully, by the end of the year, the ministry will clear the debt log.”
Oppong Kyeremeh gave his assurance of the union’s commitment to ensure that the affected students are catered for, especially in terms of their education.
He called on private and public institutions to partner with NUGS to help provide the necessary support to these students.
“Currently, we don’t have any organization supporting us. We are the NUGS so posssibly we will have to withdraw our own allowances to make sure that things work out and make sure that the lives of these children are secured. We are calling all organizations, CSOs, governmental bodies and everyone to partner NUGS in this nobel initiative.”
