Ghana’s renowned track and field star, Benjamin Azamati, has confirmed his participation to compete in the upcoming 2023 African Games, which are scheduled to be held in Ghana.
Recently, the Ghanaian athlete showcased remarkable speed, achieving the title of Africa’s fastest sprinter in the 60-meter category at the New Mexico Team Open.
This achievement was attained at the Albuquerque Convention Centre in New Mexico, USA, where Azamati secured second place with a remarkable time of 6.57 seconds in Heat 1 of the Open, narrowly trailing behind American Sprinter David Foster
The 26-year-old athlete decided to sit out the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary due to injury. However, he has since announced his participation in the upcoming all-African Games, where he will proudly represent Ghana on home soil.
In a post cited by Univers Sports, Azamati confirmed his participation by saying
I am thrilled to share that I will be representing our nation in the African Games this March in Accra. This is a call to all of you to come in full force and support us. Let’s unite and cheer for Ghana – he said
The Ghanaian athlete’s involvement in the African Games significantly bolsters the team, having secured numerous accolades at the Japan Olympic Games, Azamati notably broke Leonard Myles-Mills’ 100m record of 9.98 seconds, a feat unchallenged for 22 years.
He continued to showcase his talent at the Tokyo Olympic Games, securing a commendable fourth place in heat 7 of the men’s 100m event with an impressive time of 10.13.
The 13th All African Games is scheduled in the capital city of Accra from 8th to 24th March 2024.
