The University of Ghana (UG) has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science degree (Honoris Causa) on distinguished engineer, scholar, and innovator Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to innovation and engineering.
The honour was bestowed following his participation as the keynote speaker for the two-day 2026 Aggrey–Fraser–Guggisberg Memorial Lectures, a flagship intellectual platform of the University that brings together scholars, industry practitioners, policymakers, and members of the academic community for high-level discussions on issues of national and global importance.
Pronouncing the award, Chair of the UG Governing Council, Agyeiwaa Brew, stated:
“Professor Washington Yotto Ochieng, in recognition of your outstanding contributions to engineering, scientific innovation, and global navigation systems, and for delivering the inspiring 2026 Aggrey–Fraser–Guggisberg Memorial Lectures, the University of Ghana is pleased to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa, in the category of Outstanding Innovator.”
Professor Ochieng was also presented with a citation and an artwork incorporating Adinkra symbols representing his personality and achievements, as well as gifts from sponsors of the event.
Also in attendance at the ceremony were members of the Ghana Dance Ensemble, the University of Ghana Jubilee Choir, and students from second-cycle institutions, including Achimota School and Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon.
Held at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, the lecture was delivered on the theme “Building Sustainable Smart Cities on Resilient Digital Infrastructure.”
