Provost of the College of Education, Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe has revealed plans by the College of Education in collaboration with University management in commercializing the printing press and establishing it as an independent body.
He made the remarks during the ‘Faculty and Staff Durbar’, which was hosted as part of the University of Ghana’s 75th-anniversary celebrations. The event was themed “75 Years of University-based Adult and Continuing Education in Ghana’, Sharing Our Story”.
According to Prof. Codjoe, the printing press has been facing delays in printing due to procurement and staff issues. He articulated that in setting the printing press as an independent body, the institution may provide employment to the public.
“Concerning the printing press, we made a case for the University to outsource all of its printing work to the printing press, which they agreed to. The University’s management team is collaborating with the printing press to develop a plan for commercialising the press. However, there are a few hitches here and there since the printing press is unable to meet all the demands of the university, so they occasionally must subcontract it to outside establishment printing presses. We want the printing press to be its institution because they must go through University procurement and staff issues, which causes delays in printing so the printing press must be its institution that can hire and pay its people like a private company”.
Prof. Codjoe also announced the College’s plans to launch two important projects: the construction of research facilities and surveillance centers across as well as the construction of an Annual New Years’ conference facility. He was however saddened by the inadequacy of funding for the projects.
“We are aiming at establishing research and surveillance sites across the country…a proposal has also been put together to build a conference facility for the Annual New Years School. These days however, funding [for the projects] has seized as it is no longer happening, so we need to find a way to attract more of it.”
Meanwhile, Prof. Samuel Codjoe also stated that the School of Continuing and Distance Education (SCDE) has gained institutional recognition from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission GTEC for its Takoradi and Kumasi city campuses. The accreditation would be proof of the college’s standards to meet requirements of education in Ghana.
“We have also received institutional accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for the Takoradi and Kumasi city campuses.”
