As part of its 7th Literacy Week celebration, the University of Ghana Basic School (UBS) had organized a long-awaited durbar to climax the celebration in grand style.

The grand durbar of the week celebration, which was held at the forecourt of the school’s premises on November 30, 2023, was based on the theme ‘Reading: My Super Power’, under the auspices of the Head of School, Mrs. Christina Adwubi Armah and the distinguished chairmanship of the ORID Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Felix Asante.

The weeklong celebration, which saw activities such as the distribution of reading materials, reading exercises, and quiz competitions, sought to improve reading dexterity and stimulate the interest of pupils in taking up reading as a passion.

Also present at the event was Registrar of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Emelia Agyei Mensah, the board chairman of the University Basic School, Prof. Bernard Senadza, former heads of school, alumni, authors, parents, and members of the university community.

He noted that these strides would go a long way in building students in all other fields of academia and the corporate space as well.

“We all know the ability to read and write is very important. If you are able to read very well, you will be able to understand mathematics, science, history, and even languages. To the management, thank you very much for organizing this week’s celebration, and I am hoping that pupils will take advantage of this to improve their reading skills.”

Also at the event, the Head of School, Mrs. Christina Adwubi Armah expressed her joy and contentment with how receptive pupils have been to the literacy initiatives.

She also led the presentation of awards dubbed `the Head of School Merit Awards’ and certificates to deserving students whose potential and skills throughout the week and the past academic years had earned them crystal plaques, reading materials, citations, and for some, an all-expenses-paid trip to Kumasi by air to visit the Manhyia Palace, the Military Museum, and the Okomfo Anokye Sword.

“Those who worked harder to keep their positions among the first three for three consecutive years were given special awards; this has helped encourage our pupils to keep doing their best all through the years.”

Meanwhile, Univers News engaged some of the awardees who shared their joy in their achievement and how this will forge them into more wins.

“I feel very happy to be one of the awardees for this year; this award has kept me on my toes; whenever I want to give up, I tell myself I can do it and I will succeed”, an excited pupil shared.

Excited awardees share their appreciation for the opportunities.

Other highlights of the grand durbar were serenading tunes from the Ghana Dance Ensemble, the University Basic School Atenteben Ensemble, and a ‘saprewa’ performance, not forgetting the UBS Teacher’s Band, which set the tone for the entire event.
