The University of Ghana’s Dean of Student Affairs, Prof.Rosina Kyeremanten, has advised the Electoral Commission chairman to be neutral considering the role of his office in upholding integrity during elections.

This follows an emerged audio recording of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council Electoral Commission (UGSRC EC) Chairman, Mudasir-Ibn Ibrahim, lobbying for a merger deal with presidential aspirant; Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah known as ‘Manuel Life’.

Speaking on the issue, the Dean of Students indicated that the EC chair is required to be neutral regardless of his interest in candidates due to the sensitive role of his office.

“If you are an electoral commissioner, you are supposed to be neutral. You are not supposed to be seen taking sides. I mean, obviously, we all know who we support and we all know. Even the electoral commissioner of Ghana supports a party or the other. But publicly, you are not supposed to declare your stance. You are supposed to be neutral because of the nature of the work you are doing.”

She further stated that considering the merger deal issue compromises the credibility of the commission, it is up to the student body to approach the matter constitutionally as it breaches the SRC constitution.

“Guess the students themselves will have to take it up…… Well, it goes against their [SRC] constitution, doesn’t it?…They could go by their constitution and do what they think is best.”
