The University of Ghana has cautioned individuals and groups against encroaching on its lands at Borteyman in the Greater Accra Region.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, August 20, management stressed that the university remains the rightful owner of the lands, supported by valid documents and title. It warned that any unauthorized sale, construction or development on the property amounts to criminal trespass under Ghanaian law.
The university cited the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806), and the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) as legal grounds to prosecute offenders. It further stated that trespassers face the risk of fines, imprisonment, removal of unauthorized structures and possible civil actions for damages and recovery of possession.
“The University of Ghana, as a public institution and the lawful owner of its legally acquired lands situated at Borteyman, will strictly invoke this provision and other laws to ensure the immediate removal, prosecution and punishment of all trespassers,” the statement read.
The university urged the public to desist from engaging in or facilitating any purported sale, allocation or development of the said lands. It also said it will not hesitate to demolish unauthorized structures and pursue criminal prosecution against encroachers.
Management concluded with a warning that anyone who disregards the notice does so at their own risk and will face legal consequences.
