The Financial Secretary of Mensah Sarbah Hall, Hillary Asabea Kwakye, has raised concerns over the unhygienic state of the hall’s washrooms, attributing the issue to student behaviour.

Her remarks follow a recent water shortage crisis in the hall, where she emphasised that maintaining clean facilities remains the responsibility of students despite the challenges posed by a limited water supply.

Speaking on Radio Univers’ Campus Exclusive on May 5, Hillary emphasised the need for students to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment, especially in light of the ongoing water shortage.

She noted that despite multiple communiqués, direct engagements, and even instances where individuals were caught in the act, many students continue to neglect basic hygiene practices—an attitude she described as frustrating.

“It is frustrating. Despite several communiqués, direct engagements, and even catching some individuals in the act, students are still not taking responsibility for their actions.”

Miss Kwakye, therefore, urged students to adopt a more responsible approach to washroom use, highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy living environment.

“The challenge starts with the students themselves. When they don’t keep their space tidy, it becomes difficult to hold the sanitation officers accountable. The officers are meant to clean—not deal with the aftermath of a completely messy environment.”

“Unfortunately, students often leave the place in disarray, making it hard for us to report sanitation officers’ poor performance to management because the students’ behavior becomes the more pressing issue.”
