Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has launched the national WACCBIP-DELTAS Phase 2 Programme.
She officiated the launch at the opening ceremony of the 7th annual WACCBIP Research Conference, which was held at its premises at the University of Ghana.
The three-day conference, which runs from July 26th through July 28th, was themed “Innovative Research for Sustainable Impact.” It provided a valuable opportunity for young scientists trained at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) to connect with world-renowned scientists and industry professionals.
In her opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor stated that funding from the DELTAS Phase 2 Programme would improve scientific research in Africa and further the pioneering of innovative technologies on the continent.
“So once again, the University of Ghana continues to establish itself as a leader in West Africa and in Africa through the partnerships it establishes. When we get funding, we do not keep it to ourselves, but we bring along the rest of Africa because we need to build a crystal mass of scientists right here on the continent who will do research that will address the needs of our continent, and so on that note, I have the pleasure to launch the DELTAS phase 2 programme.”
She also commended WACCBIP for its outstanding progress in scientific research and innovation and encouraged the center to further propagate scientific research in Africa.
“Also, on behalf of the management of the University of Ghana, I wish to commend the WACCBIP team under the able leadership of one of my two deputies, Professor Gordon Awandare, for such a telling performance. I also extend my appreciation to all the researchers, sponsors, partners, and organizers who have made this conference possible. Let us remember that our research holds the key to a brighter and more sustainable future.”
The Vice-Chancellor also launched the 10th Anniversary celebration of WACCBIP (WACCBIP@10) to commemorate the achievements of the center over the years since its inception.
“So in commemoration of 10 years of academic excellence, 10 years of capacity building, training African scientists in Africa for the continent, and 10 years of cutting-edge research in the Health Sciences, we celebrate WACCBIP, and I truly declare the 10th anniversary of WACCBIP duly launched.”
The WACCBIP-DELTAS Phase 2 Programme is an initiative by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA), with support from Wellcome and the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) which is set to contribute to the achievement of SDG 3. It focuses on ensuring healthy living and well-being for all at all ages and provides high-quality training and cutting-edge research on infectious diseases (IDs) and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
