The Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), has temporarily halted their strike action, effective Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

This follows government’s vow to meet their demands within two weeks, as outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed on October 2, 2024. Some of their demands included government assurances that the VMA and Off-Campus Allowance would be paid, as well as the inclusion of The University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UNIMAC) migration onto the Universities Pay Structure, among others.

However, students of the University of Ghana will still be forced to stay home and will not be resuming school.

On September 16, 2024, SSA-UoG began their strike, impacting two crucial offices at the University of Ghana: the Students’ Account Office and University of Ghana Computing System (UGCS). These offices are responsible for ensuring students’ academic and residential fees are reflected on their portals, allowing students to register for courses and sign for accommodation. This led to the University postponing the 2024/25 academic year a day before reopening, until further notice, as students faced registration challenges.

Despite the suspension of the SSA-UoG strike, effective October 16, 2024, students are still compelled to stay home due to another ongoing strike. This is the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), who declared a strike on October 10, 2024. Their reason for the strike is a demand for the government to implement a nationwide ban on all illegal mining and prospecting activities in protected areas, including forest reserves, farmlands, and water bodies.

UG students are still awaiting an immediate nationwide ban on illegal mining activities by the government for UTAG to call off their strike, allowing school to resume.
