Deputy Director of the Institute for Education Studies, Mr. Patrick Apea-Danquah has praised the Adisadel College Management for their swift action on bullying among students in the school.

This follows a viral video of what appeared to be a senior student physically assaulting a junior student for misconduct. The Adisadel College Management subsequently dimissed the culprit in the incident ahead of investigations of the matter.

Speaking to UniversNews, Mr. Danquah was pleased with the handling of the matter, as he noted how the school’s management had disciplined the student appropriately, without infringing on his right to education.

“They have taken the action as per the law required because there is a code of conduct for students as well as the staff. I think they’ve taken the right step. I believe all those involved have been suspended and the student who perpetrated the act has been dismissed. But in all this, if it’s a child, you can’t take their right to education away from them.”

On the prevalence of bullying in Senior High Schools, Mr. Danquah praised the use of social media as an avenue to bring such matters involving bullying and other form of assaults to the surface.

He also praised the GES for their actions on matters concerning violence in schools in Ghana.

“In recent times, whenever [bullying] happens, it is revealed on social media. Everybody gets to know that they are given the necessary punishment. And I believe a lot of parents also give good advice and also caution their wards not against the behaviour. I believe [bullying] has gone down in comparison to how it used to be even in the 80s and 90s. So the GES has made a marked improvement in that.”

Meanwhile, the GES has also assured stakeholders that investigations would be subsequently carried out on the matter by the Regional Director of Education in a statement dated 24th July, 2023.

“Management has directed the Regional Director of Education to liaise with the school authorities and the relevant law enforcement agency to investigate for appropriate action. Ghana Education Service assures the general public that we are taking this matter very seriously and are committed to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all students across the country.”
