The University of Ghana Student Representative Council’s Electoral Commission (UGSRC-EC) has announced the postponement of Junior Common Room (JCR)elections in certain halls on campus.
The announcement was issued in a statement dated 23rd June, 2023.
According to the statement, elections was supposed to take place on the 28th of June, 2023. However, the designated date for the elections coincided with what was recently declared as a statutory public holiday by the government.
This aligns with the press release issued by the Ministry for the Interior, Republic of Ghana, declaring, June 28, 2023, as a statutory public holiday. The ministry’s announcement emphasized that the day would commemorate Eid-ul-Adha and would be recognized as a nationwide public holiday.
“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 28th June, 2023 which marks Eid-ul-Adha, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
The UGSRC-EC went on to wish Muslims a happy Eid.
“The UG SRC-EC in consultation with the Electoral Commissioners of these affected halls wishes to inform the general student populace that all elections scheduled for June 28, 2023, are postponed. Reason being that the day happens to be a public holiday. We apologize for any inconvenience caused we wish to use this opportunity to wish all our Muslim brothers and sisters happy Eid.”
The SRC’s EC expressed its apologies for the inconvenience caused by the postponement and presented a revised schedule for the election of the affected halls.
The new date for the affected halls are as follows:
JEAN AKA NELSON HALL ELECTION – THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2023
BANI HOSTEL – FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 2023.
However, the new date for the elections in Dr. Hilla Limann Hall is yet to be decided.
The communique added that a meeting has been arranged for Dr. Hilla Limann Hall JCR members to convene and discuss a suitable date for their election.
