Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Akosua Manu, has tasked the youth to avail themselves for volunteering opportunities.
This, she says will equip them with skills needed in the job market.
She made these remarks at the second edition of the Ignite Youth Empowerment Initiative held on February 8, at the University of Cape Coast dubbed, “This is my Story”.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer expressed her disappointment at the refusal of the youth to take advantage of volunteer opportunities
According to her, the desire to make quick money has blinded the youth and made them refuse to take up volunteering jobs. She tasked them to be passionate and enthusiastic when volunteering.
“Volunteerism seems lost in a lot of young people today, that if you want to do something, it is tied to monetary value because somehow in our political setting and social setting, we have said things like “don’t do things for free”, “you eat where you work” and these clichés do not work for a lot of people but it is said repeatedly, and it has come to be some sort of foundation for young people in what they do.
“If you are doing something, let enthusiasm be the watchword for you, be passionate about it.”
She further highlighted her initiative to support the girl-child, especially during their menstrual periods.
“Last year, I set up a foundation, and it is centered on youth advocacy, women empowerment especially my first project, was on helping young females who have started their monthly period, to get access to sanitary wear so that they don’t drop out of school”.
Other keynote speakers for the second edition of Ignite Youth Initiative were the Executive Director of Klicks Foundation, Mrs. Mary Kuffour, and Business and Investment Consultant, Prince Kofi Amoabeng.
Akosua Manu is a Ghanaian political activist and a youth advocate. She is currently the Deputy Chief Executive after serving under the First Lady of Ghana, Her Excellence Rebecca Akufo-Addo as the deputy director of communications at her office.
