The University of Ghana School of Law (UG-SoL) is set to commence a significant fundraising campaign on October 30th, 2023, as part of its Alumni Homecoming event. This initiative aims to secure $25 million for the construction of a brand-new School of Law facility.
The official launch will feature a sod-cutting ceremony, presided over by the Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, and the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.
Upon completion, the versatile facility will house a 1,500-seat auditorium, making it Ghana’s second-largest auditorium after the Accra International Conference Center. The construction is anticipated to be finalized within 18 months after the groundbreaking.
The new SoL building will include two additional 1,000-seat lecture halls, four 250-capacity lecture rooms, eight 125-seat lecture rooms, sixteen 65-seat rooms, and fourteen Ph.D. rooms. It will also accommodate 500-seat and 200-seat moot courts, along with an administrative structure.
The facility will also incorporate auxiliary spaces such as a Sky bar, gym, clinic, Baby bay or Nursing wing, Vice-Chancellor’s Lounge, Bookshop, and more.
Prof. Nana Aba Amfo emphasized that this project holds great significance and will ensure the University of Ghana School of Law continues to produce well-prepared legal and other professional graduates to tackle contemporary challenges.
“The significance of investing in this project cannot be underestimated, as it will ensure that the University of Ghana School of Law continues to thrive and produce legal and other professional trained in law, who are well-prepared to address the complex problems of our time,” she said.
Dean of SoL, Prof. Raymond A. Atuguba also stressed that this project will enhance the quality of legal education and improve the overall student experience for law students and other professionals who train at the School.
“The SoL Building Complex is not just about bricks and mortar; it is about improving the quality of legal training and the overall student experience for law students and other professionals who train in our School.”
Over the last four years, the University of Ghana School of Law has seen a remarkable increase in its student population, growing from 600 to approximately 2,000, with academic programs expanding from 6 to 41. The number of faculties has also grown to around 100.
