Former University of Ghana Students Representative Council (UGSRC) President, Prince Asumadu has indicated that the ‘Skill Up for Jobs’ Bootcamp project launched by his administration will begin in two weeks.
The ‘Skill Up for Jobs’ was launched on July 7, 2022, and is an experiential training and exposure programme aimed to provide free job creation skills training to about 1,000 students. Unfortunately, the project stalled since its launch. According to Prince Asumadu, this was due to insufficient funds at the time of its launch and the ban on public gatherings in the University
Speaking with UniversNews, he announced that the bootcamp project is expected to start in a few weeks from now.
“The Skill Up Project budget of GHS1.3 million is going to come from sponsorships, not the coffers of the SRC and as at the time we left office, the companies to sponsor had closed their books. This in addition to the ban on public gather on campus led to the halt of the project. But this SRC administration and the lead implementors, Global Entrepreneurship Network and the SRC Development Board have had talks working to implement the project in about two weeks’ time,” he said.
He further revealed that the students who will be trained in the Technology programme of ‘Skill Up for Job’ project will gain access to internship opportunities with some technology companies like Google.
“The lead implementors, Global Entrepreneurship Network, are talking with technology companies like Google to offer paid internships. The interns will work online. They will also have the opportunity to be permanent workers if they perform well.”
The project with a budget of about GHS1.3 million intends to be a weekend training program in a period of one month. The training comprises of in-person practical skills sessions which intends at training students to acquire skills for the job market.
The Skill Up for Jobs Bootcamp is expected to expose participants to the creation of jobs and help them to be able to create their own jobs.
