A lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Ghana, Dr. Priscilla Attafuah, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing preventive measures to safeguard kidney health. Her remarks come in light of the annual celebration of World Kidney Day.

Observed globally on March 13 each year, World Kidney Day is a health awareness campaign aimed at reducing the prevalence and impact of kidney diseases. This year’s theme, “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Health,” underscores the need for early detection and proactive steps to maintain kidney health.

Speaking to Univers News, Dr. Attafuah highlighted the key lifestyle choices that contribute to kidney health.

“Regular exercise is essential to minimize the risk of kidney disease. A balanced diet with reduced salt intake, adequate hydration, and moderation in alcohol consumption are also critical. Additionally, routine medical check-ups are necessary to detect early signs of kidney complications,” she advised.

Dr. Attafuah further stressed the need for individuals to seek immediate medical attention if they notice unusual symptoms.

“Changes in urine patterns, pain during urination, discoloration or blood-stained urine, as well as swelling in the feet, hands, and ankles, are all warning signs that should not be ignored”

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes kidney disease as the sixth fastest-growing cause of death worldwide. In 2020, WHO data indicated that kidney disease accounted for 4,161 deaths in Ghana, representing 2.38% of total deaths, ranking the country 56th globally in kidney disease-related fatalities.

With the recent launch of the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to address the challenges posed by chronic diseases, expectations are high for a transformative impact on Ghana’s healthcare system.
