UG inaugurates Takoradi City Campus to expand academic reach in Western Region

The University of Ghana has reached a significant milestone in its pursuit of accessible and quality education with the inauguration of the Takoradi City Campus (UGTCC) on March 9, 2024. This development not only signifies a step towards enhancing the university’s brand and standards but also opens up new opportunities for undergraduate admissions in the western region.

Initially established in 1962 as the ‘Takoradi Workers’ College,’ the campus has undergone a transformation under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, aligning with the university’s vision for academic excellence.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amfo emphasized the necessity of this expansion, highlighting the need to alleviate infrastructure strain caused by over-subscription on the main campus. She stressed on the campus’ role in streamlining access to the university’s services for prospective students in the region.

“We recognize that we need to get our education closer to where the people are. There are so many young people and even older people here in the Western Region who need access to higher education.”

Acting Principal for the campus, Prof. Bernardin Senadza outlined the purpose and objectives of UGTCC, emphasizing its commitment to providing effective mentoring and nurturing students into globally responsive citizens.

“At Takoradi City Campus, our central objective is to provide a top-tier university education that equips students to excel, lead, and become responsible scholars, professionals, and global citizens.”

The inauguration of UGTCC marks a significant role towards making quality education more accessible and impactful in the western region, reflecting the University of Ghana’s dedication to excellence and inclusivity.
