The Head of Halls at the University of Ghana, Dr. Charles Wiafe Akenten, has disclosed that male residents in the Commonwealth Hall and Menah Sarbah Halls are likely to lose their residential status for the 2022/2023 academic year.

Speaking to UniversNews, Dr. Wiafe Aketen stated that these proposals were made in a meeting involving the Hall masters on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

“All male students who were in the Sarbah Hall last semester will not be in the hall next semester. And those in the Commonwealth Hall will also lose their residential status as members of Commonwealth Hall,” he said.

Dr. Wiafe Akenten further indicated that the decision is subject to approval from the University Management, Academic Board, and University Council.

“These are proposals been made. They will have to go through the University Management, Academic Board, and probably University Council for approval before being implemented,” he added.

If the proposals are approved, residents of the various halls will be assigned to the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL) halls -Limann, Kwapong, Jean Nelson, and Elizabeth Sey- and other private hostels on the University’s campus.

The proposal is alleged to be one of the many measures the Hall Management hopes to implement to stop the recent clashes involving Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth halls on campus.

Reports gathered by UniversNews indicated that Management would bring in first-year level 100 students to reside in the halls in the absence of the continuing students.

The proposal is alleged to be one of the many measures the Hall Management hopes to implement to stop the recent clashes involving Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth halls on campus.

Members of the halls were engaged in a violent clash on August 8, 2022, at the premises of Mensah Sarbah hall, which led to the destruction of properties, including one of Sarbah’s hall tutors, and some injuries.

Management has since the incident commenced investigations to ascertain the root causes of the clash and find lasting solutions.
