Management of the University of Ghana (UG) has described the passing of former Radio Univers Station Manager, Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed (Alhaji), as a major loss to the institution and to Ghana’s media landscape.
During a meeting with Alhaji’s family to formally announce his demise to university management, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development (RID), Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, praised Dr. Sidick’s professionalism and dedication to campus broadcasting.
He noted that they had worked together since around 2013 and commended his role in strengthening Radio Univers and supporting initiatives such as the Research and Innovation Agenda.
“Personally, I’ve known him since around 2013, 2014. He was very instrumental in mobilising resources, and we reached a point where we had to host the Research and Innovation Agenda. Alhaji is a great loss to the University and also to the community,” Prof. Asante said, describing his passing as “a big blow.”
The Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, said his influence extended far beyond the University, noting that many leading media professionals across Ghana were trained by him.
“All of these people at the top are protégés of Alhaji,” she said, adding that he preferred to work behind the scenes to groom young journalists.
Management assured the family of its support as the University prepares to honour his legacy. The final funeral rites for Dr. Sidick Ahmed will be held on March 29, 2026.
