The College of Education has announced its plans to begin the construction of research and surveillance centres across the country as well the construction of a conference facility for the Annual New Year School.

The announcement was made by the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe.

He was speaking at the ‘Faculty and Staff Durbar’, which was hosted by the School of Continuing and Distance Education (SCDE) as part of the University of Ghana’s 75th anniversary celebrations. The event was themed :”75 Years of University-Based Adult and Continuing Education in Ghana: Sharing Our Story.”

Prof. Codjoe stated that these research and surveillance centers would provide educational-related results, which have already gained interest from some institutions around the world.

“We are aiming at establishing research and surveillance sites across the country. We will start here in Accra and in some of the coastal communities in Accra. We will monitor them over a period of time on an annual basis. This would mean we would have to budget for them, as it would serve a lot of purposes in terms of research, or we might use our own students to go and collect the information. The outcome variables will be educationally related variables. So many institutions around the world are interested in these kinds of surveillance sites and some institutions want to collaborate with our institution because of it.”

On the Annual New Years School, Prof. Codjoe reported that the government has expressed its commitment to ensuring its completion. He also revealed plans for the construction of a facility for educational research for the College of Education.

“A proposal was put together to build a facility more or less a conference facility for the Annual New Years School. The University has allotted land for the construction of it and the government has also made its commitment to help with it. We are [also] in the process of establishing a Center for Educational Research. We have set up a committee to look at that which they have brought their report and we will very soon be taking it through the various stages because the entire College of education does not have a Research Center or Research Institute.”

He however spoke on the need to gain funding for the projects, as he explained that there has been a stop to funding of projects in recent times.

“These days, funding has seized as it is no longer happening, so we need to find a way to attract more of it.”
