The University of Ghana (UG) has approved a one-time discount on fees and charges for selected categories of students for the 2022/2023 academic year.
This was revealed in a statement released by the UG Public Affairs Directorate dated 8th of May, 2023.
According to the statement, the University’s Council approved the discount in response to an appeal by the Parliament Select Committee on Education which pleaded the University to consider offering a discount on the fees for the academic year to alleviate the burdens that comes with the current national economic challenges.
The University offered a one-time discount of 2% on the 15% increment of fees for students in full fee-paying programmes, Accra City Campus programmes and distance education programmes.
“The Parliamentary Select Committee [on Education] appealed to UG to consider offering a discount on fees for the current academic year to lessen the burden on students, in view of the current economic challenges facing the country. In response to the appeal by the Parliamentary Select Commitee on Education, the University Council approved a one-time discount of 2% on the 15% fee increase approved by Parliament for the 2022/2023 academic year, for the following programmes:
1. Full fee-paying programmes
2. Programmes at the Accra City Campus
3. Distance Education Programmes.”
Affected students were directed to contact the Students Accounts Office for further enquiries on the discounted fees.
“This discount has been applied to the accounts of affected students. Affected students may contact the Students Accounts Office for any enquiries through students.accounts@ug.edu.gh or by telephone on 0209114001.”
The University also made emphasis on the disproval of claims regarding the charging of fees being illegal.
According to the University, a meeting convened by the Parliament Select Committee on Education to discuss the issue confirmed that the University had not charged any fees on an illegal basis, in compliance with the Fees and Charges Act, 2022 (Act 1080). The fees in question were charged with an increment of 15%, approved by the parliament.
“Claims that the University was charging illegal fes, wvere proven to be untrue. The Parliamentary Select Committee in Education at a meeting convened on February 9, 2023, with representatives from UG Management and UG student leaders, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Ministry of Education, to deliberate on the matter, established that UG had indeed complied with the Fees and Charges Act, 2022 (Act 1080), by charging the approved 15 % increase of fees over the fees approved by Parliament.”
