As part of activities to mark its year-long 75th anniversary, the University of Ghana organized an Alumni Homecoming to include the University’s alumni in the anniversary celebrations.
These activities took place from the 30th of March to the 1st of April, 2023 , where the Alumni Homecoming begun with a torch-light procession followed by a congregation at the alumni center. The Homecoming climaxed with the unveiling of the Garden of Fame monument.
Starting with the torch-light procession led by the University of Ghana Music Department, the procession was thronged by a number of former students as well as admirers of the university singing and bearing torch lights. They paraded the campus and ended the procession at the Alumni Center where the main event was to be held.
The main event included merrymaking memories and catching up on old times.
The Ghana Police Service band were also present to serenade guests with melodious highlife tunes.
Among distinguished guests present at the event included the Chief of Staff of Ghana, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, Registrar of the University of Ghana, Emelia Agyei Mensah, Members of the Alumni Council and Members of the UGis75 planning committee.
In an engagement with some alumni in attendance, they shared nostalgic experiences of their time as students and how things have evolved over the years.
Some also shared their sentiments on coming back to what they called their roots.
They described the experience as surreal and expressed their wish for more similar events to be organized.
On 1st April, 2023, the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo graced the unveiling of the Garden of Fame Monument with his presence at the event. The Garden of Fame was built to honour past students of the University who made major contributors to the university’s development.
The President was accompanied by the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
At the event , the President praised the alumni community of the University of Ghana for their significant act of giving back to their Alma Mater.
He expressed hope in the alumni on their assistance with the projects that the university needs as support for its development.
“…the entire project and the contribution that the alumni association is making to the development of the university are so worthwhile. And we heard from the Chancellor the very many projects that she’s seeking assistance for. And I know that the alumni association is going to take the lead in making sure that the development of UG, which is so central, and the development of our country continues at pace.”
Meanwhile the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has expressed her satisfaction with the gradual rollout of activities earmarked for the University’s 75th anniversary.
The Vice-Chancellor went on to reveal that there are more events yet to take place as part of the activities involved in the celebrations of the University’s 75th Anniversary.
She was confident in the progress of the activities planned for the anniversary celebrations.
