The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has finally complied with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) directive to appoint Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, as the interim Vice-Chancellor of the Cape Coast–based university.

This comes after GTEC instructed UCC to replace Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, who had reached the statutory retirement age but remained in office. GTEC had ordered the university to allow Prof. Aheto to act in his stead while the Governing Council prepared to appoint a substantive Vice-Chancellor. UCC initially defied the directive, which led to a series of sanctions imposed by GTEC.

However, in a letter dated September 24, 2025, the Governing Council of UCC announced its decision to comply with GTEC’s directive.

“The University Governing Council wishes to inform the University Community, its stakeholders, and the general public that at an emergency meeting held on 24th September 2025, Council decided to abide by the directives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). Accordingly, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, is to act in the interim,” the statement read.

The Council further assured that the university remains stable and fully operational.

“The Council wishes to assure all stakeholders and the University Community that the University remains stable. Academic and administrative activities continue without disruption.”

Prof. Aheto has previously served as Head of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at UCC, Deputy Director of the Sino-Ghana Joint Laboratory for Harbour Conservancy and Development, and most recently as Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC.
