The President, H.E John Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s energy crisis, which has been worsened by mounting debts and operational challenges.

Speaking during the 2025 State of the Nation Address, he outlined measures to stabilize the sector and ensure a reliable power supply.

According to the President, his administration inherited an energy sector on the verge of collapse, burdened by GHS 70 billion in debt, despite GHS 45 billion being collected in Energy Sector Levies (ESLA) over the past eight years. This financial strain has led many Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and fuel suppliers to consider halting operations.

H.E Mahama further noted that State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the energy sector are struggling to stay afloat, and without urgent intervention, some may collapse, threatening both power supply and the economy.

As part of key reforms to address such challenges, he said the government has mobilized resources to secure emergency fuel supplies after critical maintenance on the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPCO) was postponed from 2024 to 2025 without adequate contingency plans. He assured that once gas flows from Nigeria resume in early March, power supply will improve.

Despite the sector’s financial distress, H.E John Mahama  emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring stability and ensuring reliable electricity for Ghanaians.
