Educationist Daniel Fenyi has called for the removal of politics from the educational system to improve the education sector.
Analysing Ghana’s growth in education since independence, Mr. Fenyi described the education sector as retrogressive.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive, Mr. Fenyi further opined that technocrats should be allowed to take charge of the educational sector to improve the situation in the sector for the betterment of society.
“We seem to make a progress [one step forward] and retrogress about ten steps back and for me it is not helpful.
We should find a way to remove politics from our education system so that pure technocrats will take charge and help with the education sector. It is for the betterment of ourselves, kids and our future. The whole issue of politics interfering in our education is unnecessary and it is not helping at all.”
According to him, it is very disheartening that Ghana is discussing issues of textbooks and lack of chairs after sixty-six years of freedom as such issues should have been already addressed.
“It is unbelievable that sixty-six years down the line, when we talk of the educational system we are still talking about textbooks. It is so basic and sad that after sixty-six years of independence, textbooks, tables and chairs, teaching and learning materials shouldn’t be a topic for discussion”.
Mr. Fenyi suggested the integration of computer-based learning as a topic of national concern to enable virtual basic education for students to gain adequate technological information.
“If we should talk about anything, it should be the computer integration in the educational system; how to hold virtual basic education so that pupils in primary can even manipulate tablets and have technological information.
We shouldn’t be invited to be talking about lack of textbooks, students lacking chairs and tables.”
