The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed headteachers of junior and senior high schools to maintain open schools and prioritize student safety, despite the ongoing strike by three teacher unions.

The strike, initiated by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, is due to the unions’ dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to address their conditions of service.

However, GES issued a statement directing Regional and District Directors to ensure that school heads keep schools operational and closely supervise all students who attend, pending further instructions from GES management.

Below is GES’ full statement.
