Parents of suspected driver in East Legon tragedy arrested by Police

The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako and Mouha Amoako, the parents of the suspected driver involved in the tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two young girls in East Legon on Saturday, 12th October 2024.

According to the police, 16-year-old Elrad Salifu Amoako was driving a Jaguar SUV, registered GN 7801-20, when he collided with a 4×4 Acura vehicle, registration GR 2542-23, driven by Joseph Ackah, who was traveling with four other occupants.

The crash occurred on Mensah Wood Street, leading to both vehicles catching fire and being burned beyond recognition.

In a statement from the police on October 15, 2024, it was revealed that three of the five occupants in the Acura vehicle were rescued, with two sustaining minor injuries which have been treated and are discharged while one remains hospitalized for further medical care.

Unfortunately, two victims, identified as 12-year-olds Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh, lost their lives in the incident.

Elrad Salifu Amoako and his passenger were also rescued from the Jaguar and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. The parents of the suspect driver are now in custody and are assisting the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

However on October 15, 2024, a delegation from the Police Management Board, led by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, visited the bereaved families to extend their condolences. The IGP also met with the injured individuals at the hospital to offer support.

The Ghana Police Service has committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served and to provide closure for the affected families. The police expressed their condolences and prayers for the families during this challenging time.
