Over 30 students from the Ajumako Afransi Technical and Vocational Institute in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region have been hospitalized after allegedly consuming contaminated food.

According to sources from Channel One News, the students complained of stomach issues after eating the popular dish ‘waakye’ (rice and beans) for lunch on Tuesday. Some students started vomiting, while others were found helplessly ill in their dormitories.

The school authorities were alerted to the situation, prompting teachers to quickly transport the affected students to the Ajumako Baah and Salvation Army Polyclinic for treatment.

Upon hearing the news, worried parents rushed to the hospital and school to check on their children.

Physician Assistant at the Salvation Army Polyclinic, Daniel Agyeakpor, stated that preliminary investigations and lab tests are underway to determine the root cause of the students’ illness. While most have been stabilized, the exact cause remains unknown. Mr. Agyeakpor emphasized that it is too early to conclude without proper investigation.

The administrator of the Salvation Army Polyclinic has appealed for government support to address the issue. Meanwhile, the school authorities have not yet commented on the matter.

“So students started trooping to a facility over the night where there were complaints of diarrhoea and vomiting. As of now, most of them, even all of them, have been stabilised, but we don’t know the root cause.”

He added that they are waiting for the lab results before drawing any conclusions about the cause of the students’ condition.
