The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated a bold push to abolish its Special Electoral College system for selecting presidential candidates, marking what party insiders describe as the most significant constitutional reform in its recent history.

‎The proposal was a key highlight at the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference held Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

‎Held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” the conference focused on restructuring the party’s internal systems following its loss in the 2024 general elections.

‎The move to scrap the Special Electoral College is part of more than 50 motions, drawn from 59 proposed amendments, aimed at overhauling the party’s constitution.

‎In addition to the proposed abolishment, discussions at the conference centered on three main areas of reform:

  • ‎Strengthening grassroots involvement in decision-making to foster wider participation and ownership.
  • ‎Promoting youth and gender inclusion by expanding representation for underrepresented groups.
  • ‎Improving candidate selection processes for parliamentary and local government elections, while reorganizing polling station and constituency-level structures.

‎Party leaders described the reforms as a necessary step to restore public confidence and reposition the party around its founding principles.
