The running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has issued an apology for his controversial statement that ranked President Akufo-Addo’s achievements above those of Ghana’s former leaders, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

On Tuesday, July 9, NAPO made the statement in Kumasi, sparking a heated debate among Ghanaians. While some agreed with his assessment, others felt he had disrespected the country’s former presidents, particularly Dr. Nkrumah, who is revered for his role in Ghana’s independence.

In a statement released today NAPO clarified his intentions, emphasizing that his statement reflected his personal opinion and was not meant to disparage any of Ghana’s former leaders.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had.

I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor.”
