The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has suspended its strike after holding a meeting with government.
This was announced in a statement dated 29th May, 2023 released by JUSAG.
This comes after JUSAG embarked on an indefinite strike last week Thursday, May 25 to demand the approval of a new and improved salary structure for its members for 2023 and 2024.
According to the statement, the strike was suspended to allow for parties to negotiate and review the pending salaries in view of labor laws that do not permit negotiations during a strike.
“However, the labour laws do not permit parties to negotiate when there is an ongoing industrial action. In view of the above, JUSAG and Government resolved that the ongoing strike be suspended for two weeks to pave way for engagement among parties in order to fast-track the consideration, approval and payment of the new salaries in themonth of June 2023.”
A memorandum was signed by both parties, which includes the government and JUSAG to ensure an amicable engagement towards the resolution of the matter within the given time frame for the association’s demands to be met.
“JUSAG and the Government representatives therefore signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) to commit the Parties to sincere and amicable resolution oft he issue within the timelines given.”
The suspension is expected to last two weeks, as staff members have been directed to report to work on 30th May, 2023.
“Staff are to report to work tomorrow, Tuesday, 30th May 2023 to carry-out their normal duties.”
The statement also emphasized that the strike had not been called off, but had simply been suspended. It added that should their needs remain unmet, they shall be suggested to resume.
“The strike is only SUSPENDED, but not called-off. If Government does notshow the needed commitments, we shall advise ourselves.”
