In a latest development, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, has filed a petition at the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) Judicial Board, seeking an interim injunction to halt the upcoming elections.
This comes after Guru was disqualified from the 2024 UGSRC Elections. The UGSRC Electoral Commission announced his disqualification on August 16, 2024, citing Guru’s non residency status as a breach of constitution. The EC cited Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument (CI 24), which invalidates an entire ticket if one candidate fails to meet eligibility requirements.
Guru’s petition is seeking to overturn the disqualification decision and halt the elections, which are scheduled to take place on August 26, 2024. The UGSRC Electoral Commission has been summoned to appear before the Judicial Board within 48 hours.

The petition is the latest twist in a dramatic turn of events that has seen Guru’s candidacy come under scrutiny.
As the drama unfolds, all eyes are now on the Judicial Board, the highest decision-making body in the University of Ghana’s student governance structure. With Guru’s petition filed and the Electoral Commission summoned, the question is: is it just for non-resident students be barred from contesting in SRC elections when the decisions made by the SRC impact them equally? The Judicial Board’s decision will not only resolve Guru’s fate but also address this fundamental question, potentially reshaping the landscape of student governance at the University of Ghana.–
