The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that plans are underway to provide resources to all Colleges of Education across the country to improve the experiences of both students and teachers.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of some councils of the Colleges of Education held at the premises of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission in Accra, the Education Minister stated that the government’s main objective is to redefine excellence in teacher education, supported by massive investments in infrastructure across all Colleges of Education in the country.

“The government of John Dramani Mahama is fully committed to creating a conducive environment and providing resources to equip all 46 Colleges of Education nationwide to offer excellent capacity-building opportunities for both staff and students. This will ensure the best outcomes in the value chain once these students graduate and are posted to schools across Ghana to impart knowledge to our children,” he said.

Mr. Iddrisu further noted that the amount allocated for the payment of book and research allowances for lecturers has more than doubled this year. He added that, through the GETFund, the government is awarding five fully funded PhD scholarships to each of the 46 Colleges of Education to support human capacity and resource development, as part of efforts to enhance knowledge transmission in the country’s pursuit of a world-class educational system.

“The government is also providing five fully funded PhD scholarships to each of the 46 Colleges of Education to enable interested faculty members to build their capacity in various fields of endeavor, funded by the GETFund,” he reiterated.

Some selected Governing Council Chairs of the various Colleges of Education present pledged their commitment to work hand in hand with the Ministry of Education and their college management teams to ensure that the reset vision of the John Mahama-led government is fully realized.

They also appealed to the government to commit additional resources to infrastructural development, which they noted remains significantly lacking in many of their institutions.
