Gifty Dumelo, Esq., wife of Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has emphasised humility and respect as key traits required for success in the world of work.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall of the University of Ghana on July 2, 2025, dubbed “The Next Hera” Summit, Mrs. Dumelo also underscored the importance of acknowledging one’s unique path to success.

“One thing that works is humility. Be respectful. For example, if two graduates with the same qualifications from UG are looking for a job, and one is arrogant and stuck-up while the other is humble, it’s obvious the humble one will get the job. Humility can take you very far,” she said.

She added, “The essence of this conversation is also to let you know that everybody’s journey is different. Yours may start in the morning; another person’s may start in the evening.”

Also speaking at the event was 2024 Miss Malaika Queen, Lucille King, who shared how self-reflection and journaling helped her navigate uncertainty and discover herself.

“I did so much self-work. People just assumed I was more confident because I model, but it takes a lot of work. It’s very important to develop and work on yourself, and always realise there is room for growth, no matter how amazing you think you are,” she said.

She continued, “Journaling helped me a lot, especially during the competition. Sit with yourself, spend time with yourself, and journal.”

Founder of the One Project and Women’s Organiser for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Madam Victoria Naema Abdullai, also advised students to invest in building strong human capital.

“Build your human capital. The people I used to interact with and transact with made life easier for me later on. My human capital opened doors—because I was honest with one person, they led me to the next, and so on.”

The summit, spearheaded by the Office of the General Secretary of Elizabeth Sey Hall, brought together accomplished women from diverse fields to inspire and guide young ladies on campus.

Among the speakers were Professor Dokas Osei-Safo, Madam Victoria Naema Abdullai, Miss Rita Safowaa Nyako, Miss Gifty Mawenya Dumelo, Esq. (guest speaker), and 2024 Miss Malaika winner, Lucille King.
