Former University of Ghana student, Aziz Mohammed, scaled new heights on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at the West Texas A&M meet, posting a time of 3:44s in the 1500m to become the second fastest runner in the history of the school.

Aziz Mohammed, who has been in sensational form and ran a personal best of 3:50s earlier in last month’s 1500m event, has obliterated that record to set a new personal best of 3:44s.

The former University of Ghana student, who claimed multiple personal accolades in his time in Ghana, including a notable bronze placed-finish at the FASU games, has etched his name into the folklore of West Texas as the 2nd fastest man ever. (1500m)

Aziz’s latest milestone of 3:44s adds to his haul of personal bests he has attained whiles competing for the renowned West Texas, including 30:10.7 in 10km, 24:28.4 in 8km and 15:03.8 in 5km.

The Sophomore has been a beacon of inspiration for West Texas ever since his arrival in 2023, teaming up with former University of Ghana student Issac Bostsio, who happens to be a 100m runner for the institution as well.

The duo have contributed immensely in hoisting the flag of Ghana and ably representing the University of Ghana as well.

But for all his efforts, hard work and commitment to rigorous training regimes, Aziz falls short off the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification mark, of which he candidly accepted after his race, saying

“It tells me to work harder because there’s more room for improvement, and I trust the process always.”

The young Ghanaian, who burst on to the scene after taking the track by storm in his high school days in Mfantsipim, is bent on leaving an indelible mark on Ghana’s athletics.

His latest accomplishment further consolidates his desire as he moves higher up the pecking order into fourth place in the NCAA Division II for the current season.

Aziz Mohammed, who idolizes the great British runner, Mo Farah, has a handful of events to partake in if he dreams of securing an Olympic qualification berth.
