A Research Fellow at the Legon Centre for Educational Research and Policy, Dr. Martin Wiredu Agyekum has welcomed the government’s plan to construct 400 teacher bungalows, calling it a major positive step for the education sector.

The initiative announced in the government’s 2026 Budget aims to build 400 housing units across the country to improve teachers’ conditions of service and boost morale.

Speaking to Univers News, Dr. Wiredu praised the policy, noting its potential to improve teacher retention and support quality education delivery.

“I think it’s a very good idea. One which is going to improve teacher retention and also elevate the teaching profession as a whole… It’s also going to go a long way to solve the housing deficit issues in the country. Most of the teachers in the deprived areas especially do not even have a place where they are supposed to sleep or rest,” he affirmed.

However, Dr. Wiredu immediately raised concerns regarding the cost implications of the housing initiative, questioning who will bear the financial responsibility of the teachers or the government.

He stressed the need for clarity on the financial model “Is the government going to give the bungalows to the teachers for free? Is there going to be any cost? And if there’s going to be any cost, how are they even going to share? Are they going to be like a lease or a mortgage, where they will pay for some number of years? This I think we really have to look at it very well.”

He also emphasized that while the project is beneficial for boosting teacher welfare and solving housing shortages, its success hinges on establishing a clear and sustainable cost-sharing mechanism.
